Photoboard 1.1 is ready

Photoboard 1.1 is now ready and about to arrive in the App Store as a free update for Photoboard owners.

The new features :

Several group shapes (flower, grid, stack, etc.)
Slide show
Custom backgrounds

Photoboard 1.1 est maintenant prêt et devrait arriver rapidement dans l'App Store sous forme de mise à jour gratuite pour les propriétaires de Photoboard.
Voici les nouvelles fonctionnalités :

Julian and myself are amazed to find Photoboard among the top-ten apps in several countries (Germany, France, Italy, etc.)

We've read your comments on iTunes so we're now preparing a next version which should include the most asked features :

User background picker,
Some bug fix,
etc.

We're also preparing some new stuff like :

Group-selection,
Slide-show feature (I love that one)
Several stack shapes,
etc.

Next version is almost finished and should be sent to Apple in few days, stay tuned !

Julian et moi-même avons été très agréablement surpris de voir Photoboard dans le top-ten de plusieurs pays (Allemagne, France, Italie, etc.).

Nous avons dressé une liste d'améliorations pour la prochaine version grâce à vos retours :

Choix du fond
Correction de bugs
etc.

Nous sommes aussi en train de préparer de nouvelles fonctions comme :

la sélection par groupe
un slide-show (j'adore celui ci)
d'autres formes de groupement...

La version 1.1 est déjà très avancée, elle devrait être envoyé à Apple dans les jours qui viennent, stay tuned !

Photoboard 1.0 available on the App Store

Photoboard 1.0 has just been reviewed to the iPhone App Store.

Here come some new features :
- You can now move, scale, rotate the whole board or multiple pictures at once.
- Save your board on the camera roll in high-res (1600x1200)

Photoboard was produced in cooperation with Julian (author of thumbSudoku) who did a great job to make the core functions that efficient and powerfull.
We've also had quite fun to imagine and implement new features; and which kind of original apps could inherit from this project.

Voici quelques nouvelles fonctionnalités :
- Vous pouvez bouger, faire tourner, étirer la planche ainsi que plusieurs photos à la fois.
- Enregistrez votre planche dans le dossier photo de l'iPhone en haute résolution (1600x1200)

Photoboard a été réalisé en coopération avec Julian (l'auteur de thumbSudoku) qui a fait un excellent travail pour rendre les fonctionnalités au coeur de l'application si efficaces et puissantes.
C'était aussi sympa d'imaginer et ajouter de nouvelles fonctionnalités ainsi que différentes sortes d'applications qui pourraient découler de ce projet.

First iSnake review

While Photoboard is in the last step of development/test before being released on the AppStore, I've just read a review of iSnake on FingerGaming, a dedicated website "to the art and business of gaming on the iPhone and iPod Touch".

I was quite glad to read this review this morning through their RSS feed which helps me to know all about the fresh upcoming games. (I really appreciate the instant ingame video preview.)

Alors que Photoboard est dans la dernière ligne droite avant sa publication sur l'App Store, je viens juste de lire un test sur FingerGaming (en) un site dédié aux jeux pour iPhone / iPod Touch.

J'étais plutôt content de lire ce test ce matin en lisant leur flux RSS qui m'aide à me tenir au courant des nouvelles sorties. (j'apprécie particulièrement la fonction de pré-visualisation vidéo instantanée du jeu).

Ce test est en gros une compétition entre 7 jeux du serpent, gratuits et payants confondus.

I've added to this version almost all the features requested via this blog (thanks again for feedbacks) :

iSnake game for iPhone/iPod Touch is about to be released on the App Store.
This version is quite the same than the "jailbroken" version (Accelerometer controlled, funny gameover screen, sounds, etc.) but there are some extra features :
- Score table
- Enable music while playing (music was just fading out in the previous version)
- Hide gameover screen to fully appreciate iSnake animation under gravity.

Jailbroken is still available but no longer supported/updated.

Price on AppStore will be US$2.99/2,39 €

Cette version sera quasi-identique à la version "Jailbreakée" (contrôle par acceléromètre, écran de GameOver original, etc.) avec quelques nouveautés :

Remove pictures in photoboard with poof animation

I was just wondering how to remove pictures in Photoboard app the simplest / quickest way as possible.
Among the possibilities, I was thinking about those solutions :

Shake iPhone to clear the whole photoboard

Long press on picture shows a little cross to remove it (like in iPhone application menu)

But I had a simpler solution, right in front of me : icon remove poof animation in Mac OS X's dock.
I think it's more natural to remove pictures by moving them away from the photoboard itself. The global zoom feature allows it now (it wasn't suitable with the previous static photoboard interface).
I've just tested it on iPhone emulator : it's not that pleasant with a mouse but here is the scenario on the real device :
You grab the picture you want to remove with one finger while you zoom back with 2 other fingers to find a nearby bound limit, then you throw the picture away.

It's just a try and I can't confirm it will be on the final release but I can't wait to test it on real device...again...

Je me demandais comment supprimer des images dans Photoboard de la façon la plus simple possible.
Parmi les possibilités, j'ai pensé aux solutions suivantes :

Secouer l'iPhone pour supprimer toutes les photos de la "Photoboard"

Appuyer longuement sur une image pour faire apparaître une petite croix afin de la supprimer (comme dans le menu d'application iPhone)

Mais j'avais une solution encore plus simple sous les yeux : la suppression d'un icône dans le dock de Mac OS.X
Je pense que c'est un moyen plus naturel de retirer des images en les déplaçant hors de la surface principale. La fonction de zoom globale permet cela désormais (cela ne convenait pas à l'ancienne interface statique).
Je viens juste de faire le test avec l'émulateur iPhone : ce n'est pas ce qu'il y a de plus agréable avec la souris mais voici le scénario sur un vrai iPhone / iPod touch :
Vous touchez une photo avec un doigt pendant que vous dé-zoomez pour trouver un bord de la surface principale, ensuite vous éjectez la photo dans les couloirs du temps.

C'est simplement un essai et je ne peux pas confirmer que cela sera dans la version finale, mais j'ai hâte de pouvoir l'essayer sur un "vrai iPhone"...encore une fois...

Photoboard 2.0 in progress - Running on 1.2/2.0 firmware emulator

This is an early preview of the next version of Photoboard App for iPhone / iPod Touch.

There are some new ways of moving the pictures :
- Moving several pictures at the time
- Moving / rotating the whole photo board
- Moving a picture while scrolling through the board

The previous "scaling by pinching" feature is missing in the video and still under development.
This version runs on the 1.2 firmware emulator (included in Apple SDK)

Note : It's not really exiting to use it with a mouse on the emulator...
I can't wait to test it on a real device, when the Apple Developer Program will be released, *officially* in June...

I've just rewrote a part of PhotoBoard app to enable multitouch on every graphical object.
It could be photos, videos, text (mails, sms, mms), 3D shapes, etc.

Voici un reportage vidéo bien sympathique de 01net sur la Microsoft Surface et ses applications. Cette dernière étant présentée à la Sorbonne par Bill Gates himself à l'occasion de la prochaine Imagine Cup.
La vidéo conclue en montrant un iPhone avec PhotoBoard sur lequel il est déjà possible de manipuler ses photos :-)

This video shows the Microsoft Surface presentation by Bill Gates when he came in Paris (La Sorbonne) for the Imagine Cup 2008.
The voice-over comments are quite funny and a little bit sarcastic.
It ends by showing an iPhone with Photoboard, saying that we can already play with our photos on it :-)

PhotoBoard 0.4.0 in progress

PhotoBoard 0.4.0 is currently in progress.

There are two major changes :

Pictures can be added via the native photo library (like Photo.app classic)

It's now easier to add the iTunes synchronized pictures from user albums, camera roll, etc.

iPod Touch users will appreciate this ;-)
Multi-touch algorithm improved (Julian Asamer's algorithm)

Allows user to zoom and rotate a specific spot of the image. The picture doesn't force to center anymore when zoomed.

This is the work of Julian Asamer, a young talented iPhone developer who made Fractalicious.
Other changes : Keep ratio aspect (no more distorted pictures), quicker loading time, optimization of memory usage, etc.

There are still some tests and fixes before a public release but this version should be available this week.

PhotoBoard upgrade to 0.3.1 - Multitouch photo browser

PhotoBoard alpha 0.3.1 is now out.

Changes :

Settings menu enabled (user can change the wallpaper brightness)
Bring the pictures on top when touched (change layers order)
Allow user to add photos from a list of thumbnails / names (instead of adding them without selection)
Allow jpg and png files
Resize pictures when loading them to improve performance (max bounds are 800x800);
Keep ratio aspect (for example, if you have a square picture, it will not stretch to 4/3 ratio).
Some minor graphics improvements

iPod touch user :
Since iPod touch doesn't have a camera roll, you need to manually add the pictures in the /var/root/Media/DCIM/100APPLE/ directory

Todo in next versions :
What would be good for both iPod/iPhone users is to load pictures from photo library like in the Photo.app (iSketch.app has a menu like this so I'm sure it's possible)

I've also noticed than Photo.app has a progressive picture loading. It would be interesting to use it in PhotoBoard to remove loading time.

I was just planning to build a 2D physics collision engine and I've seen that the famous Petri Purho's Crayon Physics (Kloonigames) has been ported to iPhone by Thiago Ramon.

In this game, you can solve puzzles by drawing shapes to make a ball reach a little red square (a little star in the original version) using the gravity.

You can do your own level, some are very original (Crayon golf, Astrophysics, etc.) more informations on R4m0n's blog.

I was looking on the web to find inspiration for my multitouch project and I've found this video.
I just can't stop laughing !

J'étais en train de parcourir le web pour trouver de l'inspiration pour mon projet d'application multi-tactile et je suis tombé sur cette vidéo. C'est tordant !

Je vais tenter une petite traduction française pour les non-anglophones d'après ce que je comprend :

Minority report like interface app for iPhone released

The app is now available on my Installer.app reposiroty

You can replace the images by yours.
Grid.png is a 2x zoomed semi-transparent picture, you can use it for clouds for example. It's just to add a 3D effect.

I can't wait to see your modded apps :-)
You can send me them to make a gallery on the blog.

Vous pouvez remplacer les images par les vôtres. Grid.png est une image semi-transparente zoomée 2x, vous pouvez l'utiliser pour afficher des nuages par exemple. Ceci dans le but d'ajouter un effet 3D.

Je suis impatient de voir vos appli custom :-)
Vous pouvez me les envoyer dans le but de faire une gallerie sur le blog.

Multitouch image rotation and scaling (Minority Report like)

I just finished to add the zoom and translation to my previous app which rotates a picture with two fingers.

The result looks like the Minority Reports interface... (and the "Microsoft Surface" one as well).This technology is now in your pockets...

I'll publish the App and sources as soos as possible (some stuff are still to fix in the App).

Je viens juste d'ajouter le zoom et les translations à ma dernière app qui permet de faire tourner une image à l'aide de deux doigts.

Le résultat ressemble à l'interface visible dans Minority Report (ainsi qu'à celle de la "Microsoft Surface"). Cette technologie tient maintenant dans une poche de jean...

Je publierai l'application et les sources dès que possible (il me reste quelques détails à régler).

Image rotation on multitouch screen (iPhone)

I just made a video about the use of the multitouch screen in iPhone programming. The image can be rotated on itself by using fingers.

The next step will be to add a zoom/scaling effect (like in the Photo.app) to do a "Minority Report" style image viewer :-)

App and sources will be soon available on this blog...

Je viens juste de faire une video sur l'utilisation de l'écran multitouch de l'iPhone. L'image peut subir une rotation à l'aide des doigts.

Le prochain pas sera d'ajouter un effet de zoom (comme l'application Photo) pour faire un visualiseur d'images dans le style "Minority report" :-)

iSnake for iPhone : Alpha 0.4.0 is out

I've got many mails / comments for the current iSnake iPhone game, thanks guys :-)
So, I've tried to include all your requests about scores, silent mode, pause difficulty, etc. in this version.

So here come the major changes :

Scores diplays on the top left hand corner. (it's quite small, I don't know how to use more fonts to make it looks better in the whole game skin).
You can pause the game by touching the bottom black bar on the screen.
You can set the silent mode by setting the volume at minimum (the vibration will turn off as well)
Vista thing : I let you discover how Snake likes it...
Brand new icon : Thanks to Steven Ligatsa

The minor changes :

The app is now ready for custom/skin integration from Installer.app
The "Hi Score" now link to the iSnake score board. (which is not working yet...)
There are less vibrations (the eating-apple one was too much...)

Next step :

Levels & custom levels
Silent mode by switching the button
Working online score.

J'ai reçu plusieurs mails et commentaires pour la version actuelle du jeu iSnake pour iPhone, merci à tous :-)
J'ai donc essayé d'inclure toutes vos demandes concernant les scores, le mode silencieux, la pause, la difficulté dans cette version.

Donc voici les changements majeurs de cette version :

Affichage des scores dans le coin en haut à gauche. (C'est assez petit/discret, je ne sais pas encore comment changer la fonte pour une meilleur intégration au skin).
Vous pouvez mettre le jeu en pause en appuyant sur la barre sombre dans la partie inférieur de l'écran.
Vous pouvez rendre le jeu silencieux en diminuant le volume au minimum (les vibrations cessent également)
Le bidule Vista : Je vous laisse découvrir comment Snake l'apprécie...

Les changements mineurs :

L'application est maintenant prête à utiliser les customs/skins depuis Installer.app
Le bouton "Hi Score" affiche maintenant le tableaux des scores. (qui n'est pas encore fonctionnel...)
Il y a moins de vibrations (vibrer à chaque pomme mangée était un peu trop...)

Prochaine étape :

Niveaux et customs de niveaux.
Mode silencieux par le bouton dédié de l'iPhone.
Score en ligne fonctionnel

2D physics programming project

Why bringing physics simulation to a game / app ?
Just because it's the best way to have a real feeling of animation/interactions between objects and forces (gravity, explosions, etc.) in a game.

First step : Dynamics
What I've done with iSnake and its GameOver screen is to bring Dynamics problem to the iPhone. Basically, how the balls are moving/accelerating depending on the gravity (given by the accelerometer), their masses and the air friction.
To make the balls bouncing each other, I've added a collision detection algorithm with momentum conservation. (detection collision between ball was very simple : calculate the distance)

Next step : Bringing rotation after collision
The bouncing balls problem was quite simple but now, I have to compute rotation and its momentum on objects.
If you hit a rectangle object in a corner, it will not move straight but rotate. This is the next physic law about torques.
I need to experiment collision detection algorithm between simple shapes : rectangles and polygons.
Then, I'll have to calculate the rotation depending on the collision impact (torque).
Example : Contacts between rigid bodies

After that, there are some interesting stuff to add, all concern constraints : springs, rotation axis, etc.

Multiple objects collision detection algorithm (in iSnake)

I've just added a multiples objects collision detection (bouncing balls) to my current iPhone app development : iSnake.

It's another step to my platform game development, but now I have most of the parts of a pool game...

Je viens d'ajouter un algorithme pour la detection d'objets multiples (balles rebondissantes) au jeu iSnake pour iPhone.

C'est un autre pas vers le développement de mon jeu de plateforme, mais là j'ai pas mal d'éléments pour commencer un jeu de billard...

Mod my BouncingApp : Do It Yourself

I've found several funny mods/customs of the "bouncing app" on the web.
Basically, you can change the graphics by replacing the images in the BounceApp.app package/directory.

There are three images :

layer_bg.png : the background image of the app (320x480, 24bits png)
layer_front.png : the front image (for the transparent text) (320x480, 24bits png)
iphonfr.png : the boucing object (120x124, the collision rectangle starts from the top left hand corner, an extra shadow can be added to the image in the bottom right hand corner)

Don't hesitate to send me your customized applications, I'll publish a gallery of all those bouncing stuff on this blog :-)

By the way, this app is open-source, if you have some developpement skills, feel free to custom it directly by editing the source code.

Je suis tombé sur quelques modifications sympas de l'application "bouncing app" en parcourant le web.
Il est très simple de changer les graphismes de l'application en remplaçant les images du répertoire/package BounceApp.app

Il y a trois images :

layer_bg.png : l'image de fond de l'application (320x480, 24bits png)
layer_front.png : l'image superposée (pour le texte transparent) (320x480, 24bits png)
iphonfr.png : l'objet qui rebondit (120x124px : ceci représente le rectangle de collision à partir du coin en haut à gauche, il est possible que l'image soit plus grande : ombre, etc.)

N'hésitez pas à m'envoyer vos applications modifiées, je publierai une gallerie de toutes ces choses bondissante sur ce blog :-)

En passant, je rappelle que l'application est libre, si vous avez quelques compétences dans le développement, n'hésitez pas à la modifier directement en recompilant le code source.

Développement iPhone : simulation de la gravité et détection de l'orientation

Après m'être intéressé de près au développement sur l'iPhone, j'ai publié un petit tutoriel sur le développement et la compilation d'application native sur l'iPhone.

Celui ci est publié sur l'excellent blog/forum iPhon.fr (l'application lui est dédié) qui m'a aidé à me procurer un iPhone en avant première et à le débloquer facilement afin de pouvoir y développer des applications "faites maisons" (ou "homebrew" dans le jargon...)

Voici donc ma première application utilisant le fameux accéléromètre de l'iPhone afin de simuler la gravité.

Merci à Sean Heber pour les sources de ses applications iApp-a-day (Pumpkin m'a beaucoup aidé pour l'accéléromètre.) et aux "early developpers" du blog medallia.

Téléchargement et installation de l'application :

Voici deux façon d'installer l'application sur l'iPhone:

- Installation automatique (apptap Installer)

Dans l'application "Installer", ajoutez les sources "http://s.imov.eu"

Choisir "Bouncing App" dans le dépôt "Apps from iPhon.fr"

Et voilà ! L'application apparaît dans le menu principal.

- Installation manuelle (ssh / copie)

BounceApp.app (clic droit --> enregistrer sous...)

Pour installer l'application, il suffit de copier le package BounceApp.app dans le répertoire /Applications de l'iPhone et de rendre le fichier App exécutable. ($ chmod +x)

Il y a différentes manières de le faire (via SSH, le terminal, mobileFinder, etc.)

Evolutions et projets en cours :

Cette application est minimale mais c'est un premier pas dans mon projet à plus long terme : Spherik.

Il s'agit du portage iPhone d'un jeu de plate-forme que j'avais développé sur calculatrice Texas Instrument TI-89 (ASM 68k + C) ou l'on dirige une bille dans de vastes niveaux truffés de pièges, tapis roulants, plates-formes mouvantes, etc.
